As the times have changed it seems as if everyone has or needs to have health or medical insurance. It is almost inconceivable to be without it. Long gone are the days of the old country doctor's office; where it's first come first served, the doctor is a general physician, gives you the medicine you need for your current illness and it's all under $10 for the visit.

Most people get their medical insurance as part of their benefit package from their employer. This comes in many forms from complete to partial coverage of the individual employee to complete to partial coverage for the employee's family as well. The medical insurance cost can be controlled by these options, co-pays and deductibles. By using co-pays and deductibles the employee shares in the cost of their health care thus reducing the premiums the employer must pay. A minimal co-pay of $10-15 can significantly lower the rate as does a higher deductible, but the “out of pocket” cost needs to be considered before opting for the higher deductible. If your medical insurance is provided by your employer that may not be your choice as they pick the company and policy best suited to their needs and budget. Still, it's a great benefit to have.

Employers are not required by law to provide medical insurance to their employees. If that's not an option then group health insurance can be privately purchased. These can be found on the internet or through clubs and groups you belong to. If money is a problem there are even government programs to provide for your medical care. These are Medicare for older citizens and Medicaid for those with low incomes. Of course, there is paperwork to be filled out to apply for these but in the long run it is worth the effort.
